Karen Hilltribes of Thailand Silver Jewelry
Written By: Cynthia Wongngamnit

The Karen hilltribe people reside in northern Thailand along the Thai-Burmese border. Their work is made under fair trade principles. Each artisan earns a sustainable income due to them making a fair wage for the products they make. The Karen villagers make silver jewelry that is much sought after for its uniqueness and purity of content. Sterling silver has a content of 92.5 percent The 95 to 99 percent purity of the silver used to make Thai jewelry allows the silver to be shaped easier since the higher the content of silver, the softer the silver. Each piece has its own minor imperfections making each individual piece a one of a kind item. No two items are exactly alike due to the handmade methods used to make each piece of jewelry. The jewelry is oxidized, and it is hammered into shape. The use of a hammer causes indentations in the soft silver that adds to its beauty and its distinctiveness. Adding slight variations to each designed piece makes for variety and choices. A small group of people can buy the same piece of jewelry and none of the pieces will be exactly alike.
